About Shaheed-e-azam Bhagat Singh
Bhagat Singh belongs to the galaxy of freedom fighters in India who considered no sacrifice too great for the sake of liberation of the motherland from the poverty and loot of its resources which primarily from bondage of foreign rule. With his undying faith in his principles, he refused to bow down even in the face of severest of adversities. A man of unrivaled patriotism and love for his people and matchless courage, he laid down his life for the cause in the prime of his youth.
The grandfather of the martyr S. Arjun Singh had moved in 1900 from his ancestral village khatkar kalan, jalandhar ( Now district Shahid bhagat singh nagar ) to newly reclaimed lands in lyallpur district ( Now in pakistan distt faizlabad). This sikh jat family was just one of th countless farmers families which had moved from eastern punjab to settle in fertile canal irrigatted colonies in western punjab. Sr. Arjun singh was a stout supporter of social reforms and tried his best for liberating people of obsolete customs and rituals. Their ancestors have taken a stand in 1857, not to compromise on principles and refused to compromise with east indian company which offered big chunk of land as favour for opposing india patriots of first war of Independence. Sardar Arjun Singh kept up that oath. The principle that "stand with the people in their fight for rights." was upheld. This departure from the top feudal families of punjab also mad him stand in opposition to Singh sabha which was floated in 1872 on advice of British Officials. He joined arya samajists after listening to Swami Dayand while on visit to Punjab. As arya samaj preached and practiced participated in social causes liberating one from selfish motives as well as removal of untouchability.
He had three sons namely S. Krishan singh, S. Ajit singh, S. Swarn Singh all of them were born in Khatkar kalan. The year 1907 when the martyr was born at 8 : 45 am saturday the 28th of Sept. was the year of political turmoil. The partition of Bengal in 1905 and the colonization act of 1907 had impacted the common man to feel the pinch of foreign rule. Punjabi farmers were aghast and chanted "Pagri sambhal o jatta, articulating the hurt pride of a tiller of soil. Expectantly, this family was in the forefront, resulting in the banishment, exile and imprisonment of S. kishan singh, S. Ajit singh and S. Swarn Singh respectively. Birth of this boy heralded the news of imminent return of the trio from exile , banishment and prison :Bhaan wala" the "lucky one " proclaimed the family later formally called Bhagat Singh the name which was to symbolize terror to oppressor and hope for the oppressed.
The events that had a very deep impact on S. Bhagat singh's life growing p were Jallianwala Bhagh Massacre which took place on 13th april 1919, where countless people grown up , women and little children were killed in cold blood by Gen. Dyer and his soldiers. This tragedy disturbed Bhagat Singh very deeply
